FAQ:

What do you offer?

– We can support a range of mental health and wellbeing concerns, including anxiety, low mood, self-esteem, relationship difficulties and behaviour concerns

– Some therapeutic interventions we offer include person centred counselling, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and systemic family practice

– Parenting support is available to manage anxiety, behaviour and diagnosed neurodevelopmental conditions

– Wellbeing practitioners offer sessions to support with anxiety and low mood

– Social wellbeing groups including LGBTQIA+

– Drop-in sessions for parents/cares and young people. Our drop-ins offer an opportunity to talk through any struggles or issues with a qualified practitioner in a safe and non-judgemental space. No appointment is needed and you can access the drop-in casually without going on any waiting lists, or while you are waiting for an appointment

Who can refer?

– Young people can refer themselves by completing a referral form or attending our drop-in sessions. Or someone else can complete the referral – parents, carers, family members, friends

– Professionals can also make a referral with consent from the young person – for example, a teacher, doctor, support worker

Who can be referred?

– Children and young people aged 5-18 living in Sefton – this is based off home address

– For ages 5-12 we typically offer support directly to parents/carers to help manage any wellbeing struggles your child may be dealing with. Even if you are accessing parenting support, the referral will still go through your child.

Do you have waiting times?

– Currently due to exceptional high demand for our service we do have a waiting list. When you make a referral to us we will contact you with an indication of how long this will be

– You do not have to wait to access our drop-in and we encourage you to come and speak with us while you wait for an appointment

What happens once I’ve made a referral?

– You will receive a letter from us outlining our support and waiting times, however whilst waiting for an appointment you can always visit us during our drop-in sessions

– Once we have reviewed your referral you will be placed on our waiting list for an initial assessment appointment

– If you have been referred for one of our social groups, someone will be in contact with further information – you do not need to go onto a waiting list

What happens on my first visit?

– The first appointment we offer is an initial assessment that gives us a chance to get to know you and see how we can help. You will meet a Venus practitioner at one of our centres, or remotely through a video call, who will take you through some questions and you will have the opportunity to find out more about us too

– *Include video tours of the centres here if possible??*

Where will my appointment be?

– We offer appointments across two centres – the Star Centre & Thornton Children’s Centre

– We also offer virtual appointments that take place via online video calls

– We will always do our best to accommodate whatever you are more comfortable with

When will my appointment be?

– While we will do our best to offer you an appointment that suits you, the majority of our slots do fall within the school day. We can provide you with information of your appointment for school, who in our experience are very supportive

How often are the sessions and how long will I see a therapist?

– Once you begin working with a therapist we will typically offer 8 weekly sessions up to an hour long. Your appointment will take place at the same time each week.

Will Star Centre tell anyone what I talk about?

– Everything you tell us is always safe and confidential, however if we feel you or someone else is at risk, we may need to share this with someone else. We will always keep you in the loop and let you know if this is the case

How can I contact you?

– For general enquiries you can contact our main centre at Venus by calling 0151 474 4744. Our friendly team can help with any waiting list queries or general questions you may have about your referral. Please note our therapeutic staff aren’t available outside of appointments or drop-in sessions, so if you want to talk to someone about how you are feeling you can visit our drop-in – no appointment needed.

– For any urgent concerns or if you are really worried about your child you need to contact the CAMHS crisis team (Children & Adolescent Mental Health Service) – they are available 24/7 7 days a week on 0151 293 3577 or freephone 0808 196 3550. Young people can also contact them directly for immediate support.
